Welcome to our Having the Chats podcast.Hello, I'm Maeve and over the coming weeks and months, I'll be chatting to some amazing people who will share their stories with us, real people with real stories. People who have found themselves facing an unexpected bump in the road, a health scare or crisis which meant facing complete uncertainty – all of whom manage to navigate their way through adversity.Having faced my own bump in the road twice in 2019, I had what you might call a 'forced awakening' - I knew I had to stop and take care of myself.During that time, I also had moments of feeling quite alone – even though I was surrounded by family and close friends, and while their support was a comfort they couldn't fully relate to what I was going through, I needed to understand it and while there are most likely hundreds of thousands of people going through something similar, I didn't know of anyone and there is a sense of anxiety and helplessness that goes with that, isolation.There is huge comfort in knowing that you can identify with someone out there through a shared common experience.And that's what this podcast is all about, I want to give people a platform to share their experiences in the hope that it will help others.Most of us have heard of the saying that a problem shared is a problem halved and we know how important it is to talk, but when you know someone has gone through something similar to you, it not only gives you hope that you too will get through this, it gives you a connection with the world.Nobody goes through life unscathed and some definitely bear a heavier burden than others and while I try to practice gratitude everyday for how lucky I am, I'm a firm believer that everything is relative...life shouldn't be about comparisons... and everyone should feel a connection to someone or something in this world...and so I hope this podcast will encourage people not to lose faith or hope.That no matter how difficult or dark times may be, the light will shine again and even though it may not be the same as before, it will get brighter.I hope you stay tuned and listen in to us having the chats over the next few episodes - if you like what we're doing please do subscribe to follow us or leave a comment to stay connected. On this weeks episode I talk to my cousin Shiona – in 2009 Shiona went through what should be one of the best moment's of your life, finding out your pregnant but in stark contrast the joy was shortlived and overshadowed by the dreaded news that her Mam's cancer had returned. Today, Shiona chats to us about the highs and lows of becoming a mother and losing her own mother in the same year.

S1 Ep7 – Losing a Mother & Becoming a Mother: Shiona's Story

We hear about what type of woman Shiona's Mam, Noreen, was and the relationship they had. We hear about her diagnosis with breast cancer at the age of 48 and the highs and lows of her journey over the next few years.

We hear about her how Shiona shared special moments with her Mam, in those early stages of her own first pregnancy and how she got to share the choosing of those important baby names, but how in stark contrast, she misses her for the most ordinary things like a new mammy needing her own mammy for advice.

We hear of her lasting legacy not only through her family and extended family and friends but also through the Noreen Armstrong Memorial Ladies Lunch - a fundraising event setup to raise funds in her name for the hospital that treated her and cared for her in those heartbreaking times. To date they have raised over €36,000 in just two events.
